AI talent bucks the hiring downturn

While overall tech job demand has cooled sharply, AI roles are surging ahead. Since 2020, postings for AI and machine learning engineers have climbed 334% and nearly 60% respectively, even as broader tech roles dropped 36%. The shift is driven by rapid enterprise AI adoption, making these specialists among the most sought-after and best-paid in the sector, with salaries up to 18% higher than peers and some roles commanding medians of $260,000. Traditional developer roles, meanwhile, have fallen by almost half since the pandemic. The gap between shrinking generalist demand and booming specialist hiring is only widening — a signal of where the competitive edge now lies.
