Flexible work models reshape Ireland’s workforce participation, IWG research finds
Flexible and hybrid working arrangements are emerging as a critical factor in HR management and workforce strategy in Ireland. Research from the International Workplace Group (IWG) shows that 44% of former part-time employees would consider returning to work if offered flexibility, highlighting untapped labour potential.
Rising commuting costs remain a major barrier for part-time workers. The study found that 40% of current part-time employees would leave their jobs if required to commute daily to city-centre offices. Almost half of part-time workers (49%) said they would consider leaving entirely if denied flexible options, and 31% of daily commuters are actively seeking new roles.
The data underscores a strong business case for flexible work models. Over half (55%) of former part-time workers reported they would rejoin the workforce if offered flexibility, while 57% noted that working from local flexible spaces would make office life more appealing. Moreover, 63% of current part-time employees indicated they would increase their hours if given the option to work flexibly.
For older workers, part-time and flexible roles have extended career longevity, with 45% stating that flexibility delayed their retirement. Commuting costs remain a central concern, affecting decisions to stay in work, with 41% of former part-time workers citing travel expenses as a deterrent and 44% of current part-time workers expressing similar challenges.
Mark Dixon, CEO of IWG, emphasised that providing flexibility is key to retaining skilled workers and attracting former employees back into the workforce. Part-time workers make up 21.2% of Ireland’s workforce, highlighting their substantial impact on overall productivity and economic performance.
