Irish tech employers plan headcount growth in 2026, Stelfox survey finds
Irish technology employers are signalling cautious optimism for 2026, with 37% of firms surveyed by recruitment specialist Stelfox expecting to increase headcount.
This follows a challenging year for the sector, which saw notable layoffs from IBM, Meta, and Glassdoor in Ireland and internationally.
The Stelfox Salary Guide 2026 notes that more than half (56%) of companies plan to maintain current staffing levels, reflecting a stabilising trend after several years of accelerated growth.
Primary drivers for hiring include increased demand for products and services (46%), expansion into new markets (30%), building future talent pipelines (9%), and AI development (7%).
Jennifer Dillon, managing director of Stelfox, said, “Despite tighter margins and cost pressures, Ireland’s technology sector remains in a strong position. The market has matured, businesses are being more deliberate in their hiring, focusing on critical skills rather than volume. The fact that almost four in 10 employers still intend to grow teams next year demonstrates continued confidence in Ireland as a hub for innovation and talent.”
The report identifies software engineering, AI (engineering and LLM integration), data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and IoT as the most in-demand skills for 2026. Dillon highlighted that AI continues to reshape the sector and the roles companies require.
However, the research also flags potential constraints, including skills shortages and challenges in sourcing specialist talent.
Dillon noted that while upskilling, reskilling, and redeployment are slowing skill obsolescence, employers still face talent shortages and are focusing on building capability within teams rather than just hiring.
Looking ahead, Stelfox recommends companies review talent attraction strategies, invest in skills development, support hybrid work, and adjust pay and benefits frameworks in line with the EU Pay Transparency Directive.
