Legal & General adds Spectrum.Life digital mental health pathway to employee benefits platform

UK insurer Legal & General (L&G) has integrated a digital mental health pathway provided by Spectrum.Life into its Spark app, expanding access to employee mental health support for the workforces of its group protection clients. The development is relevant to HR and benefits professionals seeking scalable, multi-channel mental health provision across hybrid and remote workforces.

Health & Protection reported that the pathway is available to entire workforces of L&G's group protection clients, whether insured or not, and extends to eligible immediate family members aged 16 and over in the UK and 18 and over in Ireland, where parental consent is required.

The service covers employees across group income protection, group life, and group critical illness products. Accessible via the Spark app at any time, it integrates self-guided tools, professional counselling, and preventative care within a single platform, complementing the existing 24/7 EAP telephone helpline.

Stephen Costello, CEO at Spectrum.Life, said: "Our analysis of L&G's client-facing EAP usage reveals a 25% increase in anxiety presentation in 2025, in comparison to 2024." Costello added that immediate access to mental health support via a choice of pathways is crucial, noting the service is highly scalable across hybrid and remote workforces.

Vanessa Sallows, claims and clinical development director, group protection at L&G, said: "Choice and personalisation are key to prevention and early intervention." Sallows added that the digital-first experience gives individuals an additional doorway to support, removing perceived barriers so employees and their families get help when they need it.

Users can complete a short questionnaire to assess their needs, book an initial consultation with an accredited counsellor, and discuss next steps, catering particularly for those less comfortable initiating support via telephone.
