Industry NewsLidl Northern Ireland delivers second pay rise of 2026 with £756,000 workforce investment
Lidl Northern Ireland has announced a further £756,000 (€893,000) investment in employee pay, its second pay increase of 2026, reinforcing its position as the highest-paying supermarket retailer in the region. The announcement is relevant to HR and people management professionals benchmarking pay strategy and workforce investment in the retail and frontline sectors.
Love Belfast reported that the latest increase, effective from 1 May 2026, focuses on hourly-paid colleagues and deputy store managers across Lidl's network of 44 stores and distribution centre in Northern Ireland. Hourly-paid colleagues will see their rate rise to £13.30 (€15.72), significantly above the UK National Living Wage of £12.71 (€15.03), with an average additional annual take-home pay of £480 (€567) for hourly staff and £710 (€839) for deputy store managers.
The investment builds on a £2.3 million (€2.72 Mn) pay commitment announced earlier in 2026, taking Lidl Northern Ireland's total investment in employee pay to more than £11 million (€13 Mn) since 2022.
Gordon Cruikshanks, regional managing director at Lidl Northern Ireland, said: "This latest increase reflects our continued focus on ensuring our most customer-facing and operational roles remain among the best rewarded in the market."
Cruikshanks added that creating an environment where colleagues feel supported, can grow their careers, and are recognised for their contribution is central to the company's people strategy, noting that value extends beyond pay to encompass benefits, career development, and recognition.
A further 1% investment in Lidl Northern Ireland's employee benefits package is planned later in 2026. The retailer, which employs more than 1,300 people and is currently recruiting for over 150 roles, has been recognised as a Top Employer by the Top Employers Institute for five consecutive years, the only retailer in Northern Ireland to hold the accreditation.
