Northern Ireland’s technology workforce is projected to expand again in 2025, marking its fifth consecutive year of growth. According to CompTIA’s State of the Tech Workforce UK report, tech employment is expected to rise by 1.1%, adding around 200 new jobs and lifting the total to 27,785.

The report estimates that 17,681 people already work in core technology jobs across greater Belfast, with the wider workforce spanning IT support, network engineering, software development, cyber security, and data science, as well as business professionals employed by technology companies.

Key industries fuelling demand include professional services, defence, finance, and public administration. Cyber security, software development and tech support roles are expected to be particularly sought-after. Average wages for tech occupations stand at £44,627—48% higher than the national median—highlighting the sector’s premium for skills.

“Artificial intelligence is changing the tech job market, but strong technical skills in cloud infrastructure, cyber security, data, software and tech support remain the bedrock to getting hired and promoted,” said Jason Moss, CompTIA’s senior vice president in Europe. More than half of workers surveyed said AI was raising skill expectations, intensifying competition for roles.

Northern Ireland now accounts for 6.6% of its total workforce in tech-related jobs and continues to attract international recognition as a hub of expertise. Business clusters in cyber security, AI and data analytics, cloud services, fintech, govtech, and telecoms reinforce its standing as one of the UK’s fastest-growing tech regions.
